GODLIKE.
Nicked from burger_eater, I give to you Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice in EmoticonsOne of the things that strikes me about this emoticon tour de force is that it's such a complete and total proof that yes, there really IS a good use for emoticons, and so THERE on those hoity-toity purist types who railed against their use. :) |

Silly iMovie question...
... is there a simple way to take a single image and associate it with a piece of music (thus producing one of those YouTube videos which consists of a piece of music with a labeling image)? At the moment the only way I've found that works is to create a Quicktime video which is the length of the musical selection, said video consisting of many, many duplicates of the original image, then import the video and add the music track. |

Twitter
Thanks for the suggestions. I could see Lyra tweeting about the parts of the story that she knows, but am not sure how she would know enough about the rest. This is the example that Baen sent me, tweeting between Honor Harrington and her cat Nimitz: BaenBooks: itzNimitz—must find where the humans’ secret stash of celery is. #Honorverse 7:39pm Oct. 1st BaenBooks: itzHonor—Stinker looks full of himself, must have found celery. #Honorverse 10:50pm Oct. 1st BaenBooks: itzNimitz—@itzHonor doesn’t know that I’m following her on Twitter. Soon I will have all the humans’ celery. #Honorverse I was thinking in terms of following various points of view, sometimes playing them off against each other, to hint at plot etc but mostly to tease. |

Writer's Block: Baby, you can drive my car
My dream car is 100% rustproof, is the size of a full-size van, and runs on nothing but tapwater, getting 100mpg. If I had the money, yes, I'd buy a new car, probably a full-size van, because I've got a family of 6. |

Happy Hollidays! A belated Happy Holidays to you all! Here it was pretty quiet. I miss not having any family within reach, except for my four cats, thirty (hibernating) fish, and one hyper horse. I wonder if other writers have more of a social life or if most of us are hermits huddled around our computers. What a dismal thought. Still, the story keeps unrolling. I'm about one third through the first draft of the next novel, fighting it every line of the way. Timmon has just found out the truth about his father. Funny, I couldn't really write much about fathers until mine died. That was nearly ten years ago, but he haunts me daily. I wish I had known him better. Art was his life. Writing is mine. We should have found some way to connect. Then I dreamed of my mother sitting by my bed with her wild hair and her eager, childlike expression: "Where shall we go today?" But no matter where I took her, it wasn't the right place. Dementia is damnation. On a more cheerful note, Baen wants me to write a series of Tweets before Bound in Blood comes out. I'm thinking that a novel recounted in x-number of tweets might be fun. Any suggestions from those of you with ARC editions? Be sure to tell me what chapter they come from! |

Doctor Who, the just-Past season... Prior to last night, the last part of Doctor Who I'd seen was the Planet of the Dead (Bus in another dimension) special, so I caught up with it last night with Waters of Mars and End of Time. ( Cut for spoilers, obviously... )So, in summary, not bad, some neat stuff (some of which will undoubtedly be driving fans to frothing rants), and sad, as it's an exit of one of the best Doctors, and one that I'd hoped would continue for years. Doesn't come near the epic coolness of a couple of the other seasons, especially The Stolen Earth and Journey's End, but it's a good, serviceable Doctor Who story. Alas, I was severely disappointed by this season in that it wasn't a season -- just a few specials. Hopefully this will not be the case with the new Doctor's first appearances. I wish that RTD didn't have what appears to be an impulse to do Bizarre Sh*t for no reason other than that he can; it makes some of his stuff less than it might otherwise be. |

Sorta-resolutions...
Looking over the past year and seeing some of the other posts, I realize that while when I was younger I read NONSTOP (I averaged one book per day for many years), these days I hardly read anything at all (aside from Usenet, LJ, things like that). I think I read five books this year outside of "stuff for work". So I will try to read more books this year. I finished out the year weighing in at 216.8 pounds. My high had been ~230, my low about 206, I think. So I have kept more than 10 pounds off from my starting point, despite a rebound that began once things really started getting hairy around here with health, etc. So I will endeavor to do at least as well this year, beginning 2011 at 205 pounds or less. I have started a website -- with the help of a number of other people -- for Grand Central Arena and my other books. I will endeavor to increase the material on the website and to push forward with as many reasonable methods for gaining more publicity for my novels as I can. I will take this seriously as a second career. I will finish at least two more novels this year, preferably three. I will try to watch our finances more closely and improve our financial position. |

Happy new year!
How did we spend the last night of the decade?? We stopped by a local friend's party around 7:45pm and stayed til about 10:30 in order to avoid the amateur night drivers. J played cards; I watched and traded banter with the players. We also watched our very first game of beer pong. Interesting game, I must say! Back when I was a kid we didn't have any beer pong! We played quarters or Indian! And we walked five miles to parties! Uphill both ways!;) Once we got home we watched some teevee, including a little bit Chicago ABC 7s new years eve show thinger right before midnight. ABC does the Dick Clark Rockin' New Years Eve special, but we didn't catch any of that. Haven't watched since he had his massive stroke--just too sad to see him impaired even if he's made significant progress since it happened. He's gotta be older than dirt now... Toasted the new year with some red asti spumante, very tasty indeed. Went to bed around 1:30am. Many of us had at least some rough patches throughout the last decade and especially the last couple of years. Here's to hoping that this coming year and decade are a helluva lot more decent for all of us! Love to you all! |

A silly thing ... ... I posted on Usenet, but I thought might amuse other people, from a discussion on sequels to other people's works like The Hobbit... "Know, o Prince, that between the years when the oceans drank Numenor and its gleaming cities, and the rise of the civilizations of Men, there was an Age undreamed of, when kingdoms dark and light lay spread across the world like green grass across the hills -- Rhun and Haradwaith, storied Khand, Mirkwood with its green-shadowed elves and spider-haunted ever-shifting pathways, Rohan whose gold-haired riders rode like the wind over unending plains, Umbar of black sails and red-handed corsairs, Lothlorien, unchanging, where dwelt the Perilous Lady, Mordor of grey-black dust and fire, heart of uttermost darkness. But the proudest kingdom of the world was Gondor, reigning supreme from the seven-tiered fortress of Minas Tirith. Hither came Bilbo the Hobbit, brown-haired, mild-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a riddler, a Burglar, with gigantic appetite and diminuitive stature, to tread the jeweled thrones of the earth under his furry feet." -- the Bag-End Chronicles |

Happy New Year Happy New Year to you all. I'm now officially in Victoria, TX and so far it has been wonderful. Family and friends here really show they care, even if it'sjust a call to see how we're doing. Katie has made some great friends and the Dave's are irreplaceable. It was a good choice to come here.
